Because his employer asked him to make this magnificiant painting, Leonardo worked for Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, for about eighteen years (1482-1499). The Duke decided he wanted this particular religious scene painted and Leonardo, who was not stupid, decided he wanted it to be perfect and to be valuable.
